Preparing your devices for donation

Thank you for donating! Your contributions make a huge difference. To ensure we can use your device and to protect your personal privacy, please follow this guide before dropping off your electronics.

⚠️ CRITICAL NOTE: We cannot use devices that are "Cloud Locked." If you do not sign out of your Apple (iCloud) or Google accounts, the device becomes permanently locked and we have to recycle it instead of reusing it.

Below are some extra steps you can take to ensure your devices make the biggest impact possible. If you have a donation that is not specifically mentioned here and you have further questions regarding how to prepare to donate, please feel free to reach out to us and we will be happy to help you.

  • Androids have "Factory Reset Protection" (FRP). If you reset the phone without removing your Google account first, the phone will remain locked to you.

Step 1: Remove the Google Account (Do this FIRST)

    1. Go to Settings.

    2. Look for Accounts, Accounts and Backup, or Passwords & Accounts.

    3. Tap on your Google Account (usually your gmail address).

    4. Tap Remove Account. (You may need to enter your PIN/Pattern to confirm).

    5. Repeat this for any other Google accounts listed.

    Step 2: Factory Reset

    1. Go to Settings > System (or General Management).

    2. Tap Reset or Reset Options.

    3. Select Erase all data (factory reset).

  • These devices utilize a strict activation lock which renders them unusable. You must remove your device from the “find my” portal.

If you are stuck, follow Apple’s official guide to remove activation lock, or reach out and we will be happy to assist you in person or over the phone!

  • No action is usually required on your part for Windows devices.* We will securely erase or destroy your data.

*In some rare circumstances, if your laptop or device was issued to you from your employer, it may be set up to only be registered as property of that company/organization. If that is the case, we will attempt to contact them and release the device.
